- Something innocent on the ship malfunctions in a catastrophic way and almost wipes out the crew.
- Someone is being controlled by someone or some entity and almost wipes out the crew.
- Someone aboard does something untypically stupid or erratic and ends up almost wiping out the crew.
- Someone, that has been collaborating turns out to have an ulterior motive... and almost wipes out the crew.
- Someone gets trapped / stranded / wrongfully accused of something somewhere and needs to be rescued.
- Alternative reality stuff.
- Dramatic reveal of a borg cube.
- Q shenanigans.
